How We Do It - Leading REI
REI is led by a team of experienced leaders who work together to advance the organization’s mission and provide strategic and operational direction. The President & CEO provides executive leadership, working with REI’s senior leadership teams under the overall governance and direction of the Board of Directors.



K. Douglas Erdmann, President & CEO
Provides overall executive leadership and direction for REI.
Doug became the President and CEO of REI in 2018. Prior to that he worked as a systems analyst for the United Technologies Research Center, a litigation attorney for two of Maine’s leading law firms, and in leadership for a non-profit organization. He has spent a fair amount of time overseas, including three years in South Korea and eight years in Singapore. Doug received a B.A. from Amherst College and a J.D. from Cornell Law School.
Jay Smidt, Vice President for Administration & CFO
Provides leadership for REI’s administrative and organizational operations.
Jay joined the REI team as the Director of Operations in the spring of 2014. His role includes four distinct functions – Chief Financial Officer, Director of Administration, Corporate Treasurer and Corporate Secretary. Jay has a B.A. in Business Administration from Dordt College and brings to his roles over 30 years of non-profit leadership experience, specializing in both finance and human resources. Jay has lived in the Colorado Springs area for a majority of his life and enjoys the Colorado Rocky Mountains and simply being outdoors with his wife and two sons.

Tim Moore, Seniior Vice President
Provides senior leadership in support of REI’s programs, people and organizational priorities.
Tim joined REI in 2019. With a degree in architectural engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Tim began his career in structural engineering, including time working in Kazakhstan. He moved back to Kazakhstan in 2005 with his family and lived there for 14 years, where he headed up an international logistics company and worked with a nonprofit mentoring local professionals. Returning to the U.S. in 2019, Tim is committed to helping grow REI programs strategically in each of their countries.
